Unit 4: Water! A Mighty Molecule

Table of Contents

Here is the Table of Contents (ToC).
If you are ABSENT, look at the ToC to see if pages have been added. You are responsible for keeping your notebook up to date. Left-hand pages are ones that are student-thinking and this must be your own work. Right-hand pages are group or teacher-directed and can be photocopied using the class photocopier.
TOC Water! A Mighty Molecule from last year.

Task

As a hydrologist, you have been asked to use your knowledge of physical properties and molecular structure to design and water purification plant.

Big Aha!

How does understanding physical properties and molecular structure enable a scientist to purify water?

Enduring Understanding*

- Even though our planet is over 70% water, very little of that is available as fresh, drinking water.
- Everything is made of one or more elements.
- Elements are all shown and organized on the Periodic Table.
- Elements can combine to form compounds.
- Elements have different properties which can be used to describe them.
- A physical change is when a substance undergoes a change, but it's still the same substance. Ex.Changes of state: ice (solid) melts and becomes (liquid) water.
- A chemical change is when a new substance is produced and that new substance has new properties; not easily reversible. Ex. Burning wood.
- Some of the physical properties of water are a) boils at 100 oC b) melts at 0 oC  c) exists in all three states of matter on Earth   d) becomes less dense when frozen  e) it's the "Universal solvent" (can dissolve a lot of different substances) and f) it has high surface tension.

Make it Real! Natural Dyes

Picture
Ms. Newburn's naturally dyed socks. I used Maggie's organic, fair-trade socks and dyed them with marigolds.
Picture
Homegrown marigolds used as a natural dye and helped my tomato plants from pests! The directions are in The Modern Natural Dyer.

Fibershed Movement

Here is a local solution that has gone global!  The Fibershed Movement is committed to helping people source the materials of clothes and artisans to design and construct clothes within a short range of their home, such as 150 miles. They are committed to "developing regional fiber systems that build soil & protect the health of our biosphere."

Check out some of their cool classes!
