Stewardship Opportunities
Students at Hall Middle School are expected to give back to their community by participating in community service. As a science department, we have compiled a short list of some ways you can be a steward for our ecosystem and earn community service credit.
Science-Related Community Service Opportunities
Wildcare - Lots of different opportunities; located in San Rafael
Marin Parks - Help in local parks and open spaces
Marin Audobon Society - help to restore habitat for birds and other species in our community
Golden Gate National Parks - help maintain trail parks and beautify our national parks
Richmond Grows Seed Lending Library - talk to Ms. Newburn about helping to process and package seeds to be shared with various seed libraries in the Bay Area
Seed Libraries Network - talk to Ms. Newburn about data entry support to update the list of sister seed libraries in the world; this is an activity that can be done at home after a short in-person training
Zero Waste Marin - talk to Ms. Newburn; help us collect information about different schools to help spread the zero waste campaign message
Notes from Nature - transcribe data from handwritten museum records to digitize collections; this is valuable information about biological diversity that is being shared within the scientific community; the Hall Science Department will provide several trainings in the program and protocol; transcriptions can be done at home

Question: Am I required to do community service hours?
Answer: It depend on which grade you are in. 8th graders are required to do a minimum of 3 hours. Other students are highly encouraged to volunteer.
Question: How many hours do I need to do?
Answer: It depends on your grade. 6th grade = 6 hours; 7th grade = 7 hours; 8th grade = 8 hours. Note: That this is a minimum recommendation. You are encouraged to do more.
Question: Is there a penalty if I don't do the community service hours?
Answer: For 8th graders, you need a minimum of 3 hours to participate in the graduation ceremony and if you do 8 or more hours, you get a seal on your diploma. For 6th and 7th graders, there is no penalty. However, learning to contribute to your community is a habit that is great to start cultivating for a life of service and meaning at an early age.
Question: Can I get community service hours for school activities like making Valentine's Day Cards in class?
Answer: No. Community service hours are for non-school related service.
